A Clue, Not a Contract

“I’m interested in something, but does that mean it should become my career?”

60–75 seconds

We sometimes put a lot of pressure on our interests.

You enjoy something and immediately the question becomes:

“Could this become my career?”

Maybe. Maybe not.

But that question can come too early.

An interest doesn't have to make a promise about your future to be useful.

It can simply be a clue.

Something keeps drawing your attention. You want to understand it better. You enjoy talking about it. You find yourself returning to it without anybody asking you to.

That is worth noticing.

Not because it has automatically revealed your career.

But because it has given you somewhere to look.

So instead of asking:

“Is this what I'm meant to do?”

Perhaps ask:

“What is this curiosity inviting me to explore?”

Then get closer to it.

Learn. Try. Notice what happens.

The idea

Interest is useful as a signal for exploration without needing to make a promise about the future.

A question to take with you

What is this curiosity inviting me to explore?
